St. Benedict

St. Benedict offers his Rule to his disciples as a school of the Lord’s service.   It is not merely a collection of commandments and observations, it is a life.   The counsels given by St. Benedict are like milestones along the road which he himself has followed.  His experience and the wisdom of everyday life have dictated them to him and gradually he set them down so that he could teach this life of faith to the disciples who came to him.  He teaches conversion of the heart, and the way to intimacy with God.   His is a road of humility and love, a road that leads to rebirth in the Holy Spirit.   It is a way that Jesus revealed to Nicodemus – “Do this and you will live”.
