Hello Blog Guests! Fr. Placid describes Acedia, its effects and remedy:
What is Acedia? A vice, one of the so-called ‘irascible thoughts’ and as John Cassian writes, “the one that slays the soul”. Acedia can be defined as spiritual apathy in the sense of a bone-weariness and tedium with spiritual things and the efforts necessary to live a spiritual life. It is the vice that especially afflicts monks. We do not hear too much of Acedia today in Spirituality. When the traditional Seven Deadly Sins were being categorized in the Middle Ages, Acedia got merged and swept into the vice of Sloth. But Acedia is not Sloth, it is worse than just being lazy. It really makes the doing of anything spiritually motivated to be the exact opposite. Prayer becomes like eating sandpaper.
There are remedies to counter attack the symptoms of this malady when it strikes. The first is to name the problem: Try to name the actual cause of it. Also, look for the good in others and the environment or situation. Get out of the head and do some physical activity.
