In the Catholic Church's liturgical calendar, we celebrated the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time on September 30, 2012. But the event that transpired at the Abbey of New Clairvaux on this day was a little more than the ordinary. Our regular Sunday guests and visitors filled the church to witness the occasion of Brother Stephen Nguyen's solemn profession of vows, his total and complete self-oblation and consecration as a Trappist-Cistercian monk. Brother Stephen is originally from the country of Vietnam and the monks of New Clairvaux were happy to welcome Brother Stephen's mother who took the long flight from Vietnam by herself to witness this special occasion. Mrs. Hong had never traveled outside her country and it was especially endearing to have her join the monks in prayer and even helping to harvest some grapes. Perhaps it might just be truly fitting to celebrate the new life of a solemnly professed Cistercian monk on the feast of Christ's resurrection on this particular extraordinary Sunday.
On this blog you will periodically find articles, links to pertinent websites, reflections, homilies, and images that express our monastic Cistercian life.
